Witnesses of a bygone era
Poisons & potions
19th-c. apothecary bottles
Poisons were kept in ribbed cobalt-blue glass - recognisable by touch in the dark, so they were never confused with medicine.
Lorgnette
Silver & jade
The lorgnette - folding spectacles on a handle - was both eyewear and a fashionable accessory at theatres and balls in the 18th-19th c.
Apothecary jar
Painted faience
Albarello jars came to Europe from the East; their narrowed 'waist' made them easy to pull from crowded apothecary shelves.
Apothecary mortar
Hand-cast brass
The mortar and pestle is the oldest emblem of pharmacy - herbs and minerals were ground in it by hand into medicinal powder.
